our story
Willowsong Tairāwhiti began with a small group of families, drawn together by a shared wish: to bring Steiner education to the heart of our community. Inspired by a deep respect for childhood and a love for nature, these whānau dreamed of a place where tamariki could grow in their own time — surrounded by rhythm, beauty, and belonging. From simple beginnings — gathering in homes, parks, and gardens — Willowsong grew, guided by the ideals of nurturing the whole child: head, heart, and hands. Through dedication, aroha, and trust in the unfolding journey, our community slowly built the foundations for the kindergarten we have today. Willowsong remains true to these roots: a place where early childhood is honoured, whānau are embraced, and the spirit of Steiner education lives and breathes through everyday life.
our structure
Willowsong Tairāwhiti is a not-for-profit organisation based in Patutahi, Gisborne, dedicated to providing Steiner-inspired early childhood education for the Tairāwhiti region. As a community initiative, Willowsong exists to serve tamariki (children), whānau (families), and the wider community, rather than to generate profit. Any funds raised are reinvested directly into supporting and improving our learning environment, resources, and programmes. We rely on the collaboration of parents, volunteers, and community support to sustain our vision of nurturing the whole child — head, heart, and hands — through a curriculum rooted in nature, creativity, and cultural connection. Being a not-for-profit allows us to prioritise the wellbeing, development, and joy of each child, creating a warm and inclusive place where childhood is cherished and protected.
Each year we host many fundraising events to not only bring together community but to raise funds to allow Willowsong to continue to grow. We regularly hold craft evenings, work shops, fetes and other fundraising ideas. Follow us on social media or visit our NEWS page to see what is coming up on our calendar .
our home
Willowsong Tairāwhiti is blessed to be housed in a much-loved community building with deep local roots. Originally built as part of the old Patutahi School, the hall was moved to its current site on the Patutahi Recreation Reserve in the late 1950s, where it began a new life as the Patutahi Playcentre — a place for young children and their whānau to gather, learn, and grow together. For decades, the hall stood as a vibrant meeting place for early childhood education and community life, filled with the laughter, creativity, and shared efforts of local families. The spirit of care and collaboration that shaped it lives on today through Willowsong, as we continue its original purpose: nurturing tamariki in a space designed for belonging, imagination, and connection. Nestled among the open fields and skies of Patutahi, our kindergarten offers a safe, home-like environment where the rhythm of the day and the rhythm of nature are gently woven together. We are honoured to carry forward the legacy of this special place, breathing new life into its walls with the songs, stories, and wonder of a new generation.
